When an artist can grab the listener’s attention right off the bat, it is expected that an emotional ride will follow. “You Can Have Me” opens this new folk rock album with a cool blues feel. Those familiar with Geri’s work will instantly recognize her vocal dictation. She leaves that as the focus of the song and uses her distorted voice to evoke a gritty, dark feeling. With a heart pounding rhythm, strumming acoustic guitar, and an electric slide the song breaths life into Geri’s lyrics.

As an album, Work is the Wolf is driven by prominent rhythms along with tempo changes that aid Geri in telling her stories. By provoking emotions, the title track forces the listener to move or sway with the beat. With lyrics filled with metaphors and imagery, this track demonstrates Geri X’s ability to craft dynamic folk songs.

One of the standout songs on the new album is “Instigate Defeat.” The vibe is unlike other tracks, as it opens with sense of surf rock. With this fun and upbeat song, Geri sings about someone who makes her smile. It demonstrates a fun side to the dynamic songwriter with its pop rock sense.

“F#!%” delivers an old country side with a rich Americana and folk feel. Geri’s unique voice shines in these types of songs. Her dictation allows her to put emphasis on words to create unique melodies. Following “F#!%” with a song like “I’m Broke” allows the listener to really make the connection of what influences Geri. Her sound stems from classic storytellers such as Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan.

A highlight of all of Geri’s music is that it exudes a breath of fresh air into the music industry. With so many artists looking to imitate the success of others, the amount of cookie cutter copy musicians out there is on the rise. Not many can write songs that demonstrate a true ability to be a storytelling, rock woman of indie music.

Capping off the end of the album is “Live Fast, Die Young.” Geri’s signature sultry voice is prominent but the real attention grabber is the distorted harmonica. The listener can almost picture Geri on stage in a smoke filled club as she plays her spoons and sings her heart out.

It is clear that Geri X is a rare and genuine talent. Her rocker vibe and free spirit make her an artist unlike any other. With great releases such as Work Is The Wolf, Geri is sure to make her mark on the world as an artist.

Rating: 5/5 Stars!!!!

Technology has become so much a part of our lives it’s almost scary. We constantly move and sometimes miss what is right in front of our faces. Derrival sings about the modern age in the following lyrics:

Growing up in a modern age,
Taking pleasure in past art,
Love seemed so easy on the page,
The hardest is finding a place to start.

I can’t shake this feeling we’re moving too fast,
Teach ‘em how to drive so they don’t crash,
Hold them youngsters close,
Where you’ll be in a year no one knows.

During Derrival’s second track of their album The Autumn Game / Modern Age Kids 7” “Modern Age Kids” the music is still rocking, but at times the song slows down and it seems as if lead singer Adam Mah’s voice slows, quiets, and sounds a little sad that the world is moving way too fast. They tell audiences to slow down and realize what’s right in front of you. The guitars, drums, and Mah’s voice mesh so well together and during the instrumental parts of the song you may find yourself tapping your toes and moving your head. Mah’s voice might remind listeners of Isaac Slade’s, the lead singer of The Fray.

Out of Langley, British Columbia, Derrival is made up of friends Adam Mah (Rhythm Guitar/Lead Vocals), Glen Jackson (Lead Guitar/ Vocals), Shane Stephenson (Keyboard), Deven Azevedo (Bass), and Daniel Kozlowski (Drums).

The album begins with “Autumn Game” in which the first few notes of the song features two dueling guitars, a bass and electric guitar that if you listen closely can be heard throughout the song. They are the background of the song, but the fuel for it. And then at the end, all the instruments start playing really loud and the entire band and a crowd sings Cause it’s a free, free for all, after all in the last few lines of the song. With how it’s recorded it sounds like a live recording, because of the echoes. It sounds like it was so much fun to record.

According to their Facebook biography, “Autumn Game” is about the transition between high school and real-life when all the decisions you make are your responsibility. The entire song sounds like it’s a party, because that’s really what high school is, until you have to choose your future.

Derrival’s next goal is to create an entire full length album and that’s the only thing listeners won’t like about The Autumn Game / Modern Age Kids 7” is it’s not longer. Their music and lyrics are so powerful listeners will want to come back for more!

Rating: 4/5 Stars!

In some cases though, it’s alright if the music resembles another artist, especially if that musician or band has succeeded in the music industry. California based band, Capkins, is an example of a talented group of musicians who resemble the sound of great current rock bands like Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, and The Gaslight Anthem. Each of those popular bands have experienced a lot of success, so why not try for the same sound? It’s like the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

On their premiere E.P., Sink Boat Sink, Capkins displays a classic indie rock sound with guitar driven tracks and catchy uptempo beats throughout each song. The songs tell a story, so Capkins forces you to really listen and pay attention to the lyrics. Sink Boat Sink is like reading a book. If you don’t listen to every lyric in each song, you’ll have to start it over again because you may miss an important part and then you won’t understand the rest of the song.

Capkins plays around with many beats on the second track, “Dissolution.” The song starts off slow with a single guitar, and then another guitar and the drums come in with a more uptempo beat. By the time the chorus arrives, the song takes another direction with a new beat. With a lyric like “this heavy heartbeat,” you almost feel as though Capkins is using these different beats to emulate a person’s beating heart and help convey the emotions showcased in the lyrics.

The first track off of Sink Boat Sink, “Slept,” has a fun beat that will have an audience dancing and jumping along with the chorus. At first listen, you may think Capkins is displaying a slower tempo on the track, “Everylight,” but this bass heavy song only starts off slow before picking up pace like every other song off of Sink Boat Sink.

While Sink Boat Sink has five tracks that display a great indie rock sound, each song sounds similar for the most part. Luckily, this new band has a lot of room to try and experiment with some new material. There is no denying that Capkins has the talent to stay around for many albums in the future. With those albums, hopefully the band will get even more creative with their music.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars!

And then with further research, it’s hard to believe, but The Lips is in fact a one man band.

Anthony Laido from Oakland, New Jersey wrote the lyrics, plays all the music, and produced the entire album. Laido’s self-titled full length album The Lips was released in May, 2012, and then he released two more tracks in June, 2012 on Liar Just Like Me (B-Side).

Make sure she’s okay.
‘Cause she ain’t okay.
Okay? Okay.
Make sure she’s okay.

I think by now she’s my new girlfriend.
My sex appeal, yeah, here’s a new trend.
Style and clothes so far out of my reach.
I’ve covered my life with my own bleach.

The Lips opens with “Bleach.” It’s a very quick song, but you get a feel for how the album will sound. A strong guitar plays throughout the entire album and Laido’s voice sounds a little stressed, but it works with the above lyrics. At the very end of the song you may think it’s over, but you can hear an echo of Laido singing “Make sure she’s okay.” It’s like a hidden treasure that might be overlooked if you listen fast.

In the beginning of “Keys Open Doors” you can hear voices, like a band is about to start practicing. And then this amazing electric bass guitar rift starts that some could say is repetitive, but it gives a groove to the song. When there is a musical break in the song it always comes back. Laido’s voice sounds more mellow that in other songs, but it’s just as powerful.

Even though the The Lips Facebook reads, “All of our songs sound the same,” most listeners will beg to differ. Each song sounds different from the last and keeps listeners guessing what will come next.

Here are a few questions I asked Laido.

ES: Tell me a little bit about your background in music and how your music began.

AL: My music began with an old band with an old childhood friend in which we tried some punk/experimental music. I thought we sucked until we won over 20 songwriting awards worldwide including 7 wins for Vh-1. I still thought our music sucked, so I quit the band before moving to London. I started “The Lips” in 2010 shortly after experimenting with electronic music, and released an album called “A Generation in a Jar.” The reception was good, and so were the sales, so I figured I should start being more serious and submit to labels. I then signed with awesome “Little Heart Records” in Louisville, Kentucky, and released my debut album, self-titled on May 29th.

ES: What’s it like being in a one man band?

AL: It’s AWESOME being a one man band, mainly because there is only one mind to deal with. Let’s be honest. Most musicians are way too f***ing arrogant and moody, and I don’t know if I can deal with anyone except myself. So I write, produce and occasionally play shows alone (although most shows are two-pieces due to a drummer). I aim to keep it that way!

ES: What artists are you influenced by and if could perform with anyone who would it be?

AL: It’s funny. I don’t think I have any artists that inspire me to write or try to aim for success. I just love sound. Any form of sound influences me, good or bad. But if I could play or meet anyone, I’d go back in time and chill out with Bradley Nowell of “Sublime.” He’s a dope songwriter and he seemed like a cool dude.

ES: Are you playing any live shows soon?? If they are in Jersey I could totally go, because I live in South Jersey.

AL: I actually just ended a tour just basically running through the Tri-state area last month. We played a ton in New York City, and now I’m taking a break on shows until the fall. However, you should definitely check out 105.5 WDHA in New Jersey on August 27th at 5 p.m., because I am doing a live interview and acoustic set thanks to my man Bryan Puckett at Little Heart.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars!

Every month we are overwhelmed with great submissions and this month was no different.

Unfortunately, we can only take so many tracks for each version of Indie Overdose. The winners in all of this are you – the reader. We hope you find these tracks as rewarding as we did when we chose them.

Without further ado, here are the August, 2012 Indie Overdose artists:

***** The Big Dose *****

Pebaluna – “No, I Can’t”
Location: Long Beach, CA
Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Band Members: Lauren Coleman, Matt Embree, Jessica Lankford, Jonathan Grillo
Website: http://www.pebaluna.com
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Pebaluna

The first single off of the upcoming album Carny Life, “No I Can’t” is the highest rated track we have had for Indie Overdose. Coleman’s vocals suck you in and the subtle groove on this track doesn’t let you go. The band’s bio talks of a wide range of styles and influences. This is one heck of an introduction.

The Relative Strangers – “What’s the Weapon of Choice?”
Location: Orange County, CA
Genre: Rock
Band Members: Daniel Alcala, David Alcala, Chris Garcia, Craig Garcia
Facebook: www.facebook.com/therelativestrangers

A true band of brothers, the quartet consists of the brothers Alcala and Garcia. The band is definitely influenced by the past, but not defined by it. One could pick out the various influences throughout this great track, but the boys from OC definitely make it their own. Put this fast-paced track on in the car, open the windows and let it rip!

The Beautiful Bodies – “She’s a Blast”
Location: Kansas City, MO
Genre: Indie/Punk/Dance
Band Members: Alicia Solombrino, Thomas Becker, Luis Arana, Aaron Crawford
Website: www.thebeautifulbodies.com
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TheBeautifulBodies

Alicia Solombrino and the boys have played with some heavy hitters. If “She’s A Blast” is any indication, they’ll be headlining some of these big shows in the future. With fast-paced dance punk that will get your motor running, The Beautiful Bodies are on the verge of super stardom.

Ali Ingle – “Tornado”
Location: Liverpool, UK
Genre: Indie-folk, Pop
Band Members: Ali Ingle
Website: http://aliingle.co.uk
Facebook: www.facebook.com/aliingle

“Tornado” is a quirky little tune you could almost hear in a TV commercial. With vocals reminiscent of David Gray and strong heartfelt lyrics, Ingle has a timeless track that you can come back to year after year.

Scams – “Pyramids”
Location: Leeds, UK
Genre: Alternative, Pop, Rock
Band Members: Andy Morgan, Jamie Macneal, Adam Fenwick, Chris Burgess
Website: http://www.wearescams.com
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/SCAMS/104315960587

Working on a new album that will drop in October, “Pyramids” is a glimpse into the world of Scams. Heavy with Brit-pop and 80’s new wave influences, Morgan, Macneal, Fenwick and Burgess have quite the tasty morsel with this offering.

Youth of the Beast – “Shotgun Army”
Location: California
Genre: Alternative, Rock
Band Members: Adrian Symcox, Blake Craver
Website: http://youthofthebeast.bandcamp.com/
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/youthofthebeast

With vocals that sound like Bowie and a retro feel, “Shotgun Army” is a song that will not be content with just playing in the background. It will command your attention and you will be thankful.

Max Jared – “We’re All Connected”
Location: Tel Aviv, Israel
Genre: Pop, acoustic, folk, funk
Band Members: Max Jared
Website: http://www.maxjaredmusic.com
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Max-Jared/131457780240092

With John Butler-like guitar playing, Jason Mraz’s vocal stylings and Jack Johnson’s environmental insight, Max Jared has all the ingredients for a drink that will pack quite a punch. This environmental anthem has a little bit of everything and will not leave you bored.

The Vineyard – “Docks”
Location: Charlotte, NC
Genre: Alternative, Indie Rock
Band Members: Michael Valeri, Danielle Souder
Website: http://michaelvaleri.bandcamp.com/

This is a song that sneaks up on you. The more you listen to it, the more interesting it gets. The dual vocals of Valeri and Souder work well, but it is her voice that catches you. Valeri handles all of the instrumentation duties and the early U2-like drums work well under the floating harmonies.

This power pop trio has been around the block a time or two. Claiming they have 45 years experience in the music business combined, they have definitely learned how to put together that tricky tune that rides the line between power pop and cheese. Not every track like this needs to be on the American Pie Soundtrack. Some of them deserve better. Enter These City Limits…

Here’s your language lesson for the day. “Varjen” is Swedish for “The Wolf.” Sibelius has done extremely well in creating this quintessential indie-folk track. Unassuming guitar work, deep lyrics, vulnerable vocals and just enough accompaniment to accentuate his playing provide all the right highlights in “Shoreline Weeks.”

Frenamie – “Self-Obsession”
Location: Baltimore, MD
Genre: Rock
Band Members: Allison Taylor, Nick Taylor, Whitney Wakme, Abs
Facebook: www.facebook.com/frenamie

Self-described as “ugly music for pretty people,” Frenamie delivers raw rock at its finest. With funkified guitar riffs that rip your face off and female vocals that are anything but dainty, put away the good china. Frenamie is about to trash the place, and we like it!

Originally armed with just an acoustic guitar, Jakob Deist has brought on a couple musicians to round out the sound. While previously successful, this will be a big boost going forward. “Here Now” still features Deist’s vocals and guitar work, but the added rhythm section creates the perfect back drop for his talents.

Musically, “Mary Anne” combines all the best features of old school rock and country. The vocals are reminiscent of a young Roy Orbison or the Moody Blues in some way. There is one thing that is definite. This is a beer drinking tune. Hit the bar, find jukebox, grab a pint or six and let it go!

Upon first listen to “Mountain,” the track and band sound very close to an extremely under rated rock band of the 90’s – Tonic. Straight forward rock with anthemic vocals built for large audiences and a more than solid rhythm section drive this track. When you add in the guitar riffs that drift in and out, you have one of those tracks that can be listened to over and over.

There you have it – fifteen new tracks for your collection. Tell your friends, call your mother, slip a note to your server. They should all get in on these great songs. As always, please support these great independent artists. They need your support and love, so spread it like that rumor about your cousin…

Their sound can only really be described as experimental punk, the only other band that I can think of that comes close to sounding like them is Hawkwind.

With simple guitars - in true punk style - Nitwits are really forging their own sound. They do not hold the sort of snobbery that Pink Floyd-esque bands hold, which means their experimental nature is really left to run free, mainly through their loudness and messiness.

The first track on the album is ‘Riding The Space Cow,’ a track which starts off quickly and has these lovely little breaks in it. It is almost alike to pop-punk but luckily it isn’t refined enough and just gets carried away with the energy of the track. There are no lyrics, or at least none that are really meant to be heard and the vocals are just used as another instrument-rather than just being played around.

‘Boom Tchika Poom’ again has no comprehensible lyrics which works well because it allows the energy of the track to be what is most notable for the track, in true punkish style. This track really explodes later on because of the screaming vocals and the faster speed of the instruments.

Some Kind Of Bizarre Thing Happened is a blistering album which is exhausting to listen to simply because of the amount of energy it exudes. With ‘Cool Busy’ the next track on the album there is still no let up in the ravishing speed of it all. The DIY spirit of the band really shines here because of how unrefined it is, and because of how roughly cut it is.

‘Monkey Song’ really takes the experimentalism a stage further with what is basically a long interlude of playing along to monkey impressions. In a brilliant juxtaposition though the next track (‘Wei Wu Wei’) is the most normal and has a sort of Beatles feel to its simple melody powered by the jangling guitars and well played drums. Really this track dispels the myth that punk bands can’t play, because here Nitwits have demonstrated they can play what they want - and do it well too.

Of course it wouldn’t be the same to stay with that sound so of course in ‘Tamburello’ they are back to the punk inspired rock with slight breaks and a quick pace. Its a quick track and is over within two minutes - it almost serves as a reminder of who they are and what their original sound was.

The intro for the next track ‘Bomb’ is indescribable because it almost sounds like something Fat Boy Slim could have written. But still it works, because it shows that Nitwits really do have range and anyway, they quickly pull it back into being pure punk - thrashy and quick. Of course it does return to the style of the intro which works even better because it makes it clever compositionally too.

This Nitwits album works well on a lot of different levels - from compositionally being very clever right through he album, to also being great from a punk/DIY perspective. Nitwits are a really exciting band because of their prowess to make a track explosive without much effort - essential for any punk band.

Some bands like to bury messages like they are burying pennies in the sand while others are honestly blunt and to the point. Johnny Cash was a musician who could send a message through his music like no other. Johnny set the standard for this kind of blunt honesty. John Ellis has released a collection of songs, fifteen of them, that will tell you like it is above the beautiful acoustic music he creates.

Rural is a beautifully produced, written and performed album with songs straight from the heart. I could go through every topic he sings about but then I would be doing an injustice to his new listeners. His songs range from the mere two minutes long to the nearly four and a half minutes long leaving him long enough to tell his story that he feels he needs to tell with each song.

He does through some blues into the song “Jack Kerouac’s Blues” with its old time bluesy swag. But that’s just one example, he throws some bluegrass in there as well along with straight out beautiful acoustic songs. Although these songs sound rather plain and simple, the fact is they are nowhere close to plain and simple. That’s the beauty of it all. When you have this album playing, you don’t know where John is going to take you, yet once the song starts it don’t matter where he takes you because chances are you’re going to enjoy it. There is never much simplicity in a journey; it’s all planned by those who create for those who listen to take. Once again, that is the beauty within Rural.

John Ellis has many stories to tell and from listening to this album, he is just getting started. I know this isn’t the typical review by any means. I’ve only mentioned one song throughout the whole review and that was just to tell you about the style of the song. But this is no typical album and John Ellis is an extraordinary musician and storyteller who deserves to be heard. I’ve had this album on circulation for over a week and it will remain that way for a long time. His music is truly inspirational and is a breath of fresh air when it comes to his style of acoustic storytelling. Whether he is playing his acoustic guitar, piano, harmonica or anything else he throws into his music, it’s what he creates with his words that showcase what John Ellis is all about. Don’t hesitate to be inspired.

Rating: 4.5/5 Stars!

There is a cardinal rule, according to IMR’s editor Victor Alfieri, not to ever write a review in the first person. I’m going to break that rule! Why? Because sometimes a concert is about the experience that a person had and this time it’s MY experience.

Recently I made a last minute decision to go see a show at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia. Any show at the Tin Angel is probably one worth seeing. It has a great atmosphere and is a true listening room. Downstairs the restaurant, Sorrano, is a quaint little place with murals painted on the walls. Upstairs is the venue with reserved tables up front for dine-in guests and bar stools on the wall for other concertgoers. One of my favorite nationally touring indie artists (who happens to be from a couple towns over from mine) named Matt Duke was playing along with his label mate Riley Etheridge Jr. and a female artist named Stephie Coplan.

Stephie opened the show with her humorous lyrical style. Her songs are stories with direct lyrics. Personally, I enjoyed her style and personality. Of course, for me at least, she’s destined to be one of those artists who you like (not love) live but would probably never listen to the album.

Up next was Riley Etheridge Jr. My experience with him previously was while interning at Rock Ridge Music. I assisted in finding blogs, such as IMR, to submit his music to for review. Finally getting to meet him and see a live show made some of the work I did feel a little more meaningful. Previously I had only been able to listen to enough of the album to get a feel for what sites I should target. The live show was a great treat.

Only a couple weeks before, Riley had played the same venue with a full band. This time he chose to dawn the stage solo, just his guitar, a harmonica, and his voice. Let me explain, Tin Angel is absolutely perfect for these kinds of shows. The room cultivates an attentive, quiet audience and the sound is superb. Riley told stories and connected with the audience in a way that can only happen in intimate venues like Tin Angel. His performance allowed me to connect with his music in a way I previously hadn’t.

The night ended with Matt Duke, a singer-songwriter with a powerful and passionate voice. Listening to Matt sing is like being in heaven. Every time I hear his voice I fall into a trance. Earlier in the year I saw him play during Rock Ridge Music’s Hotel Carolina – Philly festival. In my review of that show I mentioned he had a rock quality that you wouldn’t expect from his voice. Of course during that performance he was backed by a full band. During this acoustic set at Tin Angel I was overwhelmed by the power in his vocals. It’s sensual, mesmerizing, and stunning.

Of course Matt Duke isn’t only a great musician, his personality always leaves room for several audience chuckles. He put the entire audience at ease and really made the room feel like a family. We were privileged enough to hear several new tracks that Matt has never previously recorded before as well as old favorites.

At the beginning of the night I had thought I would go home and work on other articles. In the end I had an amazing evening. For the first time in months I felt genuinely connected to the music and the fans. It served as a great reminder of why I love this industry. The Tin Angel can create magic; and when you have artists such as Stephie Coplan, Riley Etheridge, and Matt Duke your night is bound to exceed expectations.

It’s a very gentle record but one that is positively brimming with energy. From the start of the first track, to the end of the EP there is a very constant rhythm, an almost train-like quality to all of their songs. The band’s percussionist, Erick Eckstrom, provides an infectious style of drumming that does a very good job of carrying each track and the listener along with it.

The EP as a whole has a very reflective feel to it; each track is filled with a melancholic sense of whimsy and ‘what if?’ The Divide show a talent for penning lyrics that capture a great wealth of emotion, such as this line from “Colorado.”

So tell me how, tell me how, I could have been better
Remember how I sent you all my love from Colorado

The vocal harmony used for these two lines really hangs onto the syllables at the end of each line, building on the idea of desperation.

This is a very beautiful record but it definitely requires a certain mood to be able to play it from start to finish. The songs are not absolutely sad, more bittersweet, which lends them a lot of strength as folk records but are perhaps not going to have much success in the summer market as the tracks reflect a duller, cooler climate.

It is a very modern sounding sort of folk music, reminiscent of Mumford & Sons, which expertly blends the simplicity of a banjo with complex guitar riffs. The style of Ben Montalbano (Banjo) and Will Yanez (Guitar) complement each other well and consistently powerful bass lines, delivered up by Sam Peters, help to glue the whole record together.

The song ‘Country Line’ is where this works best, a pensive track that plays on traditional country and western themes of the lone wanderer, searching for lost love. The story of the song plays out beautifully, with a constant rhythm that shows the repetitiveness of a life on the road, occasionally broken up by the lively sound of strings whenever the lyrics talk of happy memories.

This is a very beautiful record, one with a lot of appeal. In spite of the band’s name, it is difficult imagining them being disliked or causing any sort of rift between friends. This eponymous EP is a fantastic debut, one the band should take great pride in and one that will hopefully push them into bigger and better things.

Rating: 4/5 Stars!

I don’t really know how I stumbled upon Antwon (somewhere on the internet of course), but after hearing Fantasy Beds in full I’ve been somewhat rigorous in recommending him to everyone I meet. So naturally upon the release of End of Earth I downloaded it immediately, choosing to purchase it for $10, because “support young artists” and all that.

The nine-track mixtape does not disappoint, with a different producer for every track, each with its own unique sound and feel. Â Antwon works with the likes of Greedhead’s Big Baby Gandhi, the very talented ambient beat producer RPLDGHSTS (repelled ghosts), Pictureplane, his good friend DJ Sex Play (previously Bad Slorp) who produced all of My West Side Horizon, and a bunch of other talented people on this tape.

I’ve been listening to it on repeat for days now and what stands out the most is how very synesthetically vibrant and pleasing it is, and how the more you listen to it more elements are to be found. Listening to this is like undoing a ‘layer’ each track, each revealing another set of emotions, thoughts and experiences.

The opening track “Laugh Now” (produced by Wounderaser) is some kind of amazing hardcore doom/noise rap anthem creation that sets the tone for the rest of the tape as one of eclecticism and experimentalism.

This might scare some people away, and if it does Antwon isn’t really for you. There’s no one really that sounds like Antwon, as much as he is compared to Biggie (to my bewilderment). If I had to compare his flow and oral presence to anyone else I couldn’t, to me he stands alone as a cross-over internet generation rapper kid and a multi-talented Bay Area musician.

Download/purchase his mixtape at his bandcamp, listen to it over and over. Follow him on tumblr, check out his soundcloud and photography blog- be aware of him because he is absolutely someone to watch. Listen to it because it’s a sound and mishmash of styles that represents something new and really awesome for hip hop.

I had the utmost pleasure of interviewing Antwon via email a couple of days ago, who was kind enough to share some of his wisdom as an artist, recommend me some hip hop and give his two cents on the rap game in 2012, Lil B and the sweet little community he’s become a part of in recent times.

INTERVIEW

How old are you?Â

im 25 years yung

How do you feel the reception has been for End of Earth so far?

its pretty nice. i feel like some people who would really get it either have either jus held in the feelings they feel or havent had a chance to sit down and listen to it yet. i still get some biggie comparison but i think its the same thing to me as a lazy fat joke and i aint fuckin with that.

I really dig this mixtape ‘cause it feels just, really ‘you’. It feels like you did this for yourself, just to have some fun, because it’s nice to be creative (or something). Is that basically how it went?Â

i was really interested in trying to remake the same feeling that i think people got from Fantasy Beds. it was crazy how people responded to it. so i felt like i could do it again and thats what i pretty much did! dreamcollabo had an influence in it and thas why every track is a different producer. it was a dream to be on pictureplane production. my music is 100% me… because its me whos telling it and i cant lie to myself but for the most part its entertainment for everyone so its up to YOU to figure it out.

The video to “Living Every Dream” is amazing. The dancing people is the best part, and the girl you ride around with is cute. Will you be making another video for this mixtape?

a couple more are coming. theyre in talks still. im not jus tryna work with just anyone and do …you know… jus another plain old rap video. i grew up in the generation where music videos ruled and the internet was too ridiculous in like 95’ and it wasnt like back then people didnt have the equipment they do now. so i grew up seeing crazy videos not jus rap videos either. watching much music and the box and mtv (when they actually had music videos) and vh1 i was seein this whole other world that was way far from what my neighborhood was. so yeah these next videos will be interesting.

Your singing on ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ is great, and I know you like to rap a lot about gurlz and womyn. Would it be foolish of me to hope for some kind of Nelly n Kelly Dilemma style tracks (lols)?Â

yes i do sing on “Diamonds and Pearls” i sing on a couple songs too on My West Side Horizon. i wanted to sing before i could really rap. singing rules ill def keep doing both. as for a duet iunno that nelly and kelly song was really corny as fuck!

You seem to be garnering a lot of attention as Antwon, are you working on any other projects at the moment? Are you still in a punk band?

DEFINITLY ALWAYS WORKING! you must work as much as you can and if youre not working you should be setting up shows and merch and PR stuff. its better to stay busy itll help you out in the long run BELIEVE ME. naaah i havent played in a band since me and my friends started the band LEATHER in philadelphia. my friend wants me to play in his band soon so ima see how that goes. im really busy with rap so itll jus be a little something.

I read in a previous interview that you used to smoke weed, listen to Biggie and draw and write and create. Do marijuana, and other substances mentioned in your raps (DMT, acid, psilocybin) influence your creative process? How do you feel about hallucinogens and creativity in general?

yeah i do drugs for sure. haha i dont like listen to biggie all the time! les jus get that straight. biggie is good but hes not my favorite rapper to listen to right now infact i barely listen to rap lately. if i do its something completely different from the style of music i make.

What’s the recording process like for you?

i wake up check my phone. either me or doug (dj sexplay)Â calls one another. doug swoops me up we go eat or get a coffee then go to his pad downtown and work on whatever were workin on for the day we do that atleast three times a week.

It feels like you’re totally immersed in this community of friends, artists, musicians and chill people, is that a part of that whole Bay Area scene kinda thang? What’s it like to contribute to/be a part of that?Â

oh yeah its pretty cool as fuck. it all recent for me. so im still getting used to the fact that its happening and its awesome im so grateful to be received the way i have!Â

I like to ask hip hop artists how they feel about Lil B, especially if they’re from the Bay. How do you feel about what he’s doing?

WE MUST PROTECT LIL B

I see you minglin’ with them Greedhead boys, is there a possibility of you being signed to Greedhead? Would you be down for that? Are you signed to anyone at the moment?

im not signed to anyones label. i do stuff with those guys but i also do stuff with other people. they understand they apart of the realm haha

It’s obvious that you’re influenced by a lot of other genres of music, who have been some really influential artists for you, growing up or whatever?Â

kate bush, pee wee herman, and jim varney

Can you recommend me some hip hops?

Some of your raps are Danny Brown level depressing. Particularly “Skullcrush” from Fantasy Beds tends to break my heart a little bit, I find it similar to Big Baby Gandhi’s “Eulogy” in that the content is something that is so emotionally charged with grief and loss that it allows for you to be totally open and honest about it, because it’s like, what else can you do but feel what you feel and write a song about it. This isn’t even a question, I just wanted to say that.

youre right! growing up with so much pain makes you jus not take anything serious or jus not want to cuz thas not a nice place to be in in your mind.

The song is a good, and hopefully telling, beginning from the four piece out of London. It begins with a rhythmic groove accented by an interlocking bass and drum beat. While the guitars repeat their two chord phrases, the bass modulates and pulls the listener forward, as if it were the tires on an old bike, beginning a journey with a short jaunt through amber leaves. As the guitars decay, a new scene begins in the first verse. Michael Rendall (Bass) and Timmy Rickard (Drums) come out of the intro with the groove in tact, and are met by Tom Skelton’s (Lead Vocals/Guitar) smooth vocals. His subtle British timbre conjures a calm dissonance similar to contemporaries like Wave Machines, or even a youthful Foals.

Near to home
this world is not my own
and it’s clearly nearly gone
unless we’re on our own
in the dark I get this feeling
I got the same got the same got the same,
defensive kind of game

Skelton comments on his distaste for something, or more particularly, someone. He reveals that he may be guilty of the very attributes of which he is displeased with in his muse. As the song intensifies, the band moves into the pre-chorus, where Skelton claims:

I’m on to you
I get the story

The chorus erupts from the previous section with soaring guitars reminiscent of bands like Kings of Leon, or the poppy Two Door Cinema Club. It all becomes a culmination of the instruments and energy of the band, as if to finalize the ascent up a hill with the swell of tambourines, guitars, and chanting vocals that are playfully catchy. The old bike in tow, sun shining gloriously over the rims of a pair of vintage shades, The Shallows can surely take the listener for a ride.

In short; get the song, ride a bike, have a good time.

Marvin Gaye did it in 1971 with “What’s Going On” and Neil Young did it in 1989 with “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Maybe he won’t get the same exposure, but Max Jared is bound to get the attention of IMR readers after they hear these influential tracks off his soon to be released album, Thoughtless Sounds. Although this album is anything but thoughtless.

Max Jared isn’t only a musician, singer, and songwriter from the Dallas, Texas area, but he’s a philanthropist, environmental activist, and has organized many social action projects in communities around the world. So, when you listen to the lyrics Jared has written, you know they come from a young man with many experiences and who has seen a lot in this world.

The first track, “We’re All Connected” sends a message that doesn’t need much explaining because the title says it all. The music could resemble a Dave Matthews song and Max’s environmental activist background comes out with these lyrics.

We must respect one another
Even the trees as our brothers
How do our actions reflect
the teaching that we’re all connected?

On the track, “Roots,” Max takes on the role of the voice of our generation. “Roots” could be an anthem for this generation to encourage them to strive to make a change in our world because we’ll be in charge next.

Our generation will soon rule the world
So what kind of change comes with it?
It’s so easy to forget
While others are suffering, you don’t feel restless

“Unify” is a fun track that displays a side to Jared that is similar to a few Jason Mraz songs when he delivers his message through his own version of rapping, in a way. With this song, he brings everything in a full circle with lyrics like these:

Unify is what I said
Let’s get it through your thickening head
‘Cause if we don’t join together, we’ll soon be dead

If you’re a fan of Jason Mraz, John Mayer, or Jack Johnson, Max Jared will be a perfect addition to your music collection. His music resembles the mellow sounds of these popular musicians, yet he displays his own unique voice, as well. While Thoughtless Sounds has songs about love and life experiences like many musicians include on their albums, it’s the songs with a deeper meaning that will make you take notice and remember this talented young man. The actual arrangements are just beautiful background music to Max Jared’s meaningful messages to this generation and many generations to come.

[Editor’s Note: This album will be released August 28th!]

Rating: 4/5 Stars!

Forgive my bitter enmity towards the mainstream, but what happened to plain young kids in denims playing in a garage band shouting out to the world about anything and everything? Didn’t The Smashing Pumpkins used to epitomize the word ‘cool’? Is it fallacious to grip onto this ideal? I don’t know, maybe I’m just stuck in the ‘90’s.

For this reason, whenever I stumble across a young and unaffected punk band who passionately loves what they do, my heart skips a beat, and that’s not just because I’m a teenage girl raging with hormones. It’s because I’m reminded what real music is about. On their Internet page, the boys from Finding Valor humbly confess they are ‘just four friends who like playing music.’ What a refreshing attitude! Their self-titled album is a sublime reflection of this kind of joyous submission, with their first song ‘Bigger Than You’ introducing clean guitar riffs and guileless punk-whine vocals.

The song laments the unnaturally elevated esteem of a heartless bitch (depending on your interpretation) and one boy’s vow to rise above her and also above ‘this town.’ The empowering and charmingly candid lyrics are enunciated by unapologetic, in-your-face pop-rock instrumentation and backing harmonies. Immediately I can confidently prophesize this is the type of band that would put on a damned good show.

Following, ‘The Price Paid‘ is definitively the strongest track on the album, introspectively reflecting on past choices and the owning up of responsibility at ‘taking the broken road.’ The awesomely poppy punk chord progressions are evocative of Paramore’s guitar style, and it’s catchy as hell. The band really displays tight musicianship, on both a rhythmic and dynamic level. Lyrically, the song would be easily relatable to a lot of listeners. Regret and confusion are emotions many young people are no stranger to throughout their formative years, yet Finding Valor adopt a trademark valiant attitude towards these difficult feelings, choosing to accept consequence over ignorance. With a definitive verse pattern and chorus, ‘The Price Paid’ is the 3-minute peanut butter to radio’s toast. So far, the album bursts with the vigor of 90’s teen flick music (think American Pie or Eurotrip) yet has a refreshingly innocent edge their band name dutifully emanates- Finding Valor. Boy, do these guys find it!

The following 3 tracks are an abundance of major-chord indulgence, guitar-dominant riffs and sentimental yet startlingly honest lyrics. ‘Somewhere South’ has a lively indie acoustic feel, demonstrating these guys can back down on the amplification when necessary. The vocals could do with a little more dynamism but like the oaky characters need time to develop in a fine vintage wine, this will mature with experience- the band is ever-growing. In account of their recent victories at numerous Battle of the Bands competitions, and their rapidly escalating number of gigs across Chicago, its clear Finding Valor’s meritorious efforts are not going unnoticed. Salubrious, wholesome, all-American pop rock is a surefire hit in this day and age, and I can positively see these guys in a stadium environment within the next year or two.

Rating: 4/5 Stars!

Think back seven months ago. How much has changed in your life personally or professionally?

When we think of how much can change in just seven short months in our personal lives we may think not much. To a band, or the members in that band, seven months could mean everything. The reason why I am choosing to say seven months specifically is because it was only seven short months ago when I received LAVOLA’s Leaving Paris EP in my inbox to be reviewed. This was my third review for Indie Music Reviewer and I was blown away by what I was hearing: powerful, mind blowing, with just the right amount of passion and emotion. After the countless times I’ve listened to Leaving Paris since that first time I am still moved and inspired. Amazing music can do that. It never seems to lose its “magic touch.”

Now the beautiful thing about IMR is how we connect with the musicians we cover and we care about what happens even after the review gets published. For LAVOLA, after their review (which came out in December of last year), the New Year brought many changes (including new band members), more recognition and great opportunities for the band to grow and get their music heard. After opening up for some big name bands like Taproot, and The Kills; LAVOLA is definitely making a name for themselves in South Florida. They were even named “Best Local band of 2012” by Florida Weekly publication (among many others). If all of this wasn’t enough, they wanted to take the time and share their journey with the readers of IMR. They answered questions in between going to school, working, playing shows and recording new music. This is an interview you don’t want to miss out on reading.

KC: Was creating music something that always came naturally to you? How old were you when you knew this was what you wanted to do?

Julian Cires: I’ve been writing music since I was 13 and even before I had an instrument to transpose anything sonically tangible, I’d often construct harmonies in my head to pass the time (and still do today). Once I began teaching myself guitar, I sort of found my vice to further enable reclusiveness. It’s amusing to think back on the numerous completed albums I had completed in 8th grade, drawing the album art during class. I’m not nearly as prolific now, haha. Somewhere a long the line my musical OCD kicked in.

KC: Your lyrics can be very cryptic and different people listening may interpret the meanings of your songs in different ways. What inspires you when writing?

JC: There are numerous catalysts that inspire me to write lyrics. And it may go without saying that all of the songs are intensely personal. On a related tangent, I’ve always had an obsession with fiction. On two separate occasions, I attempted to write a novel. 6th and 7th grade respectively, haha. I eventually studied Creative Writing in Tallahassee and as a result wrote A LOT more, inside and outside of schooling. I’ve always believed that fiction, utilized as a medium of honest expression, could illuminate, resonate and help piece together things we struggle to fully grasp.

I believe that the cryptic nature of my writing is indicative of this sentiment. For the most part, the lyrics I write in LAVOLA, and the pieces of me that I express are thinly veiled behind fictional narratives. But that’s not to say that they didn’t happen. On a certain level, they have. Sometimes literally, sometimes through a metaphor. Trapped deep down, there is a core that resonates. It’s always interesting to hear fans of the music tell me how they get my writing and how it’s helped them on a personal level, be it breakups, loss, etc. It’s gratifying, of course, but most importantly it’s reaffirming in that the core catharsis exists within these surreal fantasies, despite the perspective or interpretation.

KC: Since Leaving Paris the line-up of the band has changed. Why the change in line-up?

JC: At the start of the New Year, I sought out a new drummer and bassist just in time to open for The Kills in Fort Lauderdale. In Revolution live, actually. I remember being nervous before the first full band rehearsal, which was a few weeks prior to the show. We immediately ran through The Queen is Dead, and were blown away by how musically tight the three of were right off the bat. And it only got better from that point. I’m pretty sure celebratory drinks were had after that practice. The dissolution of the old rhythm section had been a long time coming. Partly, a natural drifting away/musical exploration and growth But most importantly, the transition was really quick and he best thing that’s happened to this project, so far.

KC: With the addition of Gene Pandolfi and Jeff Rose what can you say about the songs LAVOLA is working on at the moment? Will there be another album coming up in the future too?

JC: We’ve tracked three songs so far. Performance wise, Gene and Jeff add a musical dynamic that I never realized was absent before. Specifically, Jeff brings a versatile and intricate sound to Lavola, rhythm wise. Every time I hear Jeff drum, my brain short circuits. As far as bass is concerned, Gene brought balls. New and seasoned fans a like have noted how much better this line up sounds, which is even more reaffirming. Personally, a glaring difference I’ve noticed between the new lineup and the old involves both Gene and Jeff being multi-instrumentalists. Gene has played guitar in slew of bands and has his own songwriting project called Black Seal. Jeff is currently recording his own solo album. So despite me bringing in new material that’s already written, for the most part, both of them figure out their parts to accompany. Then, all three of us give constructive criticism on how to better the song. Be it Jeff suggesting Gene play a certain part staccato, or me suggesting Jeff to ride the crash on a certain part, or Gene suggesting how to intro a new song. Though I’ve done the songwriting, it feels more like a band, during practice, instead of me dictating how to play each part of a song, which is what occurred a lot with the past line up. Within the first month of performing as a band, both Gene and Jeff were making suggestions on how to structure certain parts, too, which is huge in the LAVOLA world. I’m surrounded by songwriters now, whom approach this project on a more creative level. It no longer feels like a labor to articulate the musical direction of a song. I barely need to articulate anything anymore, and that is the sort of chemistry that’s finally in the band now. That chemistry is definitely evident on the recordings. We’ll be sharing them soon enough.

KC: In addition to a new line up, 2012 has also brought some great recognition LAVOLA’s way. What goes through your mind when you hear your band has been named best local band for 2012?

JC: I still feel extremely appreciative for the recognition, crazy opening gigs, and most importantly, the people that understand the writing. What goes through my mind, exactly? I guess excitement with a hint of surprise. I have an inherent tendency to isolate and most of my time is spent on writing. The recognition from the outside is a shock in that sense. It doesn’t have much bearing on what I am doing, but it puts a smile on my face every time.

KC: With many bands and musicians using resources like Kickstarter to help fund album recordings and national tours, is that something you would consider doing somewhere down the line? (If no, why?)

JC: When I first heard of Kickstarter, I thought it was brilliant concept. And I still do. It’s a thin line between fundraising your musical project and panhandling. But if done thoughtfully and creatively, both fans and the artist benefit. Personally, I’m used to just working for any band expenses. Partly by playing a ton of shows, mostly by dipping out of my own pocket. Though, I have considered starting a fundraising project for a music video. For The Queen is Dead, to be specific.

LAVOLA can be seen performing pretty frequently around the Fort Lauderdale area. If that’s in your neck of the woods you owe it to yourself to see them live. New music is on the way as well; in the meantime stop by their Bandcamp page and give Leaving Paris as well as some other demos a listen.

Thanks to the band for taking the time to answer some questions and giving us a glimpse into the brains behind LAVOLA. It’s an honor to have the chance to be involved in your journey! We can’t wait to hear the new music you are working on!

The soul searching journey begins with the second track “Backroads.”This track features soulful vocals and “airy” acoustic folk melodies along with a mandolin “fluttering” throughout the track. This track is a reflective tale about a man traveling down country roads and observing how people live their lives outside of the city limits. Next, life brings hope to a young couple in the fourth track “Hold Your Breath.” This track has a “rustic” folk pop sound with light acoustic melodies and soulful vocals. This track is a peaceful tale about a man telling his girlfriend to wait and see what kind of joys life brings them. The man’s girlfriend is nervous about starting a new adventure in life.

Meanwhile, the wonders of nature stir one’s imagination in the sixth track “The Bird.” This track features light acoustic melodies and soulful vocals. This track is a soul searching journey about a man who is impressed with the tranquility of nature. The man is observing howgracefully a bird flies through the air. Finally, fear is racing through a child’s mind in the eighth track “Monster.” This track has an “eerie” sound with slow melodic pop rock riffs and soulful vocals. This track is a mysterious tale about a child having a frightening nightmare about seeing a monster. However, the child’s intense fear will be gone by the time morning arrives.

Connor Garvey gives folk lovers a lesson in life, telling people not to worry about life’s problems because everything will work out. Connor Garvey brings a refreshing folk pop rock sound to today’s music scene with brilliant musicianship and a superb vocal ability. Where Ocean Meets Land is a wonderful collection of music that will put a smile on peoples’ faces helping them to forget about the stress of everyday life for a little while.

I’ve listened to their new album Teeth several times all the way through and I have yet to figure out what genre or sub genre I would stick them in. Maybe that’s what makes them so unique; they have the ability to simply sound like The Stripe Stripe Fiasco. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Richard Schwering, Rachel King, Joel Monroe, and Bobby Barbeau have come together to create an indie masterpiece that is not only very listenable but very enjoyable. If I had to pick a few bands to compare them to I would have to say Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Poe, maybe even The Breeders but in all actuality they stand on their own with their own blend of rock music.

Trading lead vocal duties between Richard and Rachel gives each song something very unique that is missing from many bands these days. With each song there are many layers of voices that don’t follow the usual protocol in backing vocals giving each song two paths to follow. The musicianship is just as unique, never over powering yet completely energizing and relaxing all in the same. One good example of this is the song “Saphyre.” It starts with the hypnotic words “don’t you wanna be set on fire?” leading into a mysterious and powerful arrangement that will leave your head spinning.

The title track “Teeth” is another tune that draws you in with the seemingly subliminal melody leading you into the unknown. One thing about this band is its ability to draw you in and keep you at full attention the entire time. I can just imagine their live performances are just as mesmerizing as their recordings are. With songs that question relationships to the energetic musicianship from each member, these songs will stick in your head for many days and you will want to relive your first listen of The Stripe Stripe Fiasco over and over again. So whether you’d like to categorize this band as rock, alternative, new wave or any of the other genres of music the mainstream has created to confuse fans of music, you will not only enjoy this band immensely but you will for certain become a lifelong fan anxiously awaiting to see what they create next.

Their music features nothing but guitars, a harmonica, drums and a beautiful voice singing. What you hear is what you get too, because no computers were used in the mixing of their album.

Toxic Pocketbook along with their last album starts with a Rin Tin Tiger jam session. Within seconds of “The Move Apart Parcel,” listeners will be banging their heads and will be dancing along with the music. Their music and lyrics can quickly go from upbeat and rocking with drums to slow and sad with just an acoustic guitar.

Kevin Sullivan (Guitar/Vocals), Sean E. Sullivan (Bass/Vocals), and Andrew Skewes-Cox (Drums/Vocals) make up Rin Tin Tiger. According to the biography on their website, “their music carries an emphasis on lyrics, organic musicianship and raw energy,” which describes them to a tee.

If you could just for once look hideous,
And I could just for once get serious
And we could be just like that Oregon Yard,
Over grown in the rain, yellowed in the sun,
Not pretending like we aren’t.

“Oregon Yard” starts playing simply with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica. It sounds like a melancholy love song. Kevin Sullivan sings his heart out to a girl who he wishes could look hideous, so he can get down to business. He sings about being like a yard instead of pretending like nothing is wrong. The meaning of the lyrics are genuine and unexpected. Sullivan’s voice is so pure and beautiful especially in this track, because the song features him.

I aint got no friends, you know I aint got no money
I aint got no friends, I’m a bum dressed up in all my dirty laundry
I lost my job to some kid and no one else seems to want me
I aint got no love I aint got no sweetie
I aint got no love I’m a bum got my song and that’s all that seems to keep me company

The above lyrics are from their title track “Toxic Pocketbook.” It’s about a guy who lost everything and has nothing but his music, which is sometimes all you need in life, your passion. Sullivan sings about writing it all down in your toxic pocketbook, and “if it’s gonna hurt boy, you better make it good.” The song and his voice sound passionate and rough almost like he’s reprimanding someone or himself.

Please check out Rin Tin Tiger’s website and Facebook page and show them support. They are making music that is pure fun with no fuss.

With crunching guitars accompanied by the screeching vocals this is a band that possesses real skill in the art of metal making. Having only just formed this year, As The Crow Flies have quickly come together to form a solid band, with musicians that work well together and you can hear it throughout this EP.

‘Immortal Death Sign’ is the first track and begins with a simple, but catchy guitar riff accompanied by a heavier bass riff in a juxtaposition next to it which immediately gives the EP depth - but also means that immediately AtCF are being more experimental rather than just going down the ‘thrash’ route like a lot of bands.

‘House of Mercury’ is the next track on the EP and uses a lower pitched, slower more distorted riff but the real maker of this track, and perhaps the band, are the brilliantly soaring vocals which never falter and continually give the track more and more strength. The drums are solid throughout and really hold the band together, without trying to make themselves over complicated or being too simplistic that it doesn’t fit at all - like some bands do try.

‘Remains’ is the final song on the EP and is also probably the heaviest track, with the bass used to its full potential giving it a heavy, chunky sound which mean the guitar just has to layer over the top with a melody (and some solo which works really well because it isn’t too long and drawn out and immediately goes back to vocals) and of course the vocals just provide the icing to make this track a great song.

As the Crow Flies are a promising band - because of their more reflective, but big sound they have given themselves a capability and a uniqueness. Both of these things are being fulfilled because of the well structured tracks, solid musicians, great guitar solos and soaring vocals. With a little refinement, this could really develop into something special.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars!
